GLOBAL GRUB

The current global forces shaping our food industry ecosystem.

Campbell's Tightens the Belt

Campbell's is cutting deep. After a soft quarter, the company behind the soup aisle launched a $500 million savings plan through 2030, closing three plants and trimming its salaried workforce by about 13%. It is also cutting its dividend by more than a third and raising prices on select products. For an iconic pantry brand, it is a blunt admission that soup and snacks are not immune to the same cost and demand pressures squeezing everyone else. The real question is whether shoppers, already trading down, absorb another price bump.

California Puts a Badge on "Real" Food

California just gave clean eating a government stamp. State lawmakers passed a voluntary "Non-Ultraprocessed Certified" seal, with ingredient and nutrition thresholds and third-party checks, and large grocers would have to display certified products prominently. It is the first of its kind, and it could become a template other states copy. For brands, a new label to earn or to miss is coming, and "ultra-processed" is officially moving from a buzzword to a line on the shelf.

Barilla Buys Its Way Into Better-For-You

The pasta giant wants a healthier plate. Barilla acquired Goodles, the California mac and cheese startup that builds in extra protein and prebiotics, for an undisclosed sum. Goodles keeps running on its own while gaining Barilla's global reach. It is the latest big-brand bet that the fastest way into the better-for-you aisle is to buy the brand already there, not build one from scratch.

ON THE MENU: MID-DAY SQUARES

An insider look at the industry disruptors, biggest players, and culinary visionaries.

🍫 The Snack Built for the Ozempic Era

While big brands buy their way healthy, a Montreal start-up is scaling the hard way. Mid-Day Squares, the refrigerated protein-snack brand known for its founders' relentless social presence, raised $8 million to nearly double its facility.

The timing is the story. As GLP-1 medications push shoppers toward protein and smaller portions, the brand is rolling into about 300 Walmart stores and Costco, with its No Bread PB&J line already making up close to 20% of revenue.

It is a Canadian brand reading the moment better than most: less about indulgence, more about protein you can grab and feel good about.

VIRAL BITE

The story everyone is posting about, so we had to bite!

7-Eleven Builds a Flavour Bar

The corner store wants to be a food destination. 7-Eleven rolled out the "BiG Flavor Bar," a self-serve sauce and topping station across its 7-Eleven, Speedway, and Stripes stores, with seven original sauces from spicy teriyaki to smoked BBQ for pizzas, hot dogs, and sandwiches. A $3 loyalty combo pulls people in. It is a small move with a big message: c-store food is done apologizing, and the days of the sad roller dog are numbered.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT

A bite-sized serving of the strange, surprising or just plain random facts.

🐟 The Year of the Tin

Tinned fish was the fastest-growing nutrient-focused grocery category in 2026, up 51% year over year, per Instacart, as GLP-1 shoppers chase protein and fibre.

Turns out the hottest health food is the one that's been in your grandmother's pantry all along.
