GLOBAL GRUB
The current global forces shaping our food industry ecosystem.
DoorDash just bought Instacart for $17 billion.
DoorDash is acquiring Instacart for about $17 billion, or $65 per share, a 26% premium to Instacart's late-October price. The deal is at least 75% cash and is not expected to close until late 2027 or early 2028. It puts restaurant delivery and grocery delivery under one roof, and Instacart's fast-growing ad business, $331 million last quarter, is a big part of the prize. For grocers and brands, it means one more giant sitting between them and the shopper.
Walmart Canada is reinventing Great Value.
Walmart Canada is redesigning its Great Value store brand, with new packaging rolling out this fall and nearly 150 products getting the makeover in 2027. It comes as Loblaw, Sobeys and Metro all pour money into their own private labels and shoppers grow more willing to buy them. Walmart is betting that fresh packaging, plus its $6.5 billion Canadian investment, can win repeat trips, though quality and price still do the heavy lifting.
A Canadian seafood icon is being sold to Japan.
High Liner Foods, the Lunenburg, Nova Scotia company behind a big share of the fish in Canadian freezers, has agreed to be acquired by Japanese seafood firm Umios for $27 per share, about $804 million. Umios, a longtime High Liner supplier, calls the deal central to its North American expansion and has committed to keeping High Liner's headquarters in Nova Scotia. Shareholders vote in December, with the deal expected to close in early 2027.
ON THE MENU: THE CHEESECAKE FACTORY
An insider look at the industry disruptors, biggest players, and culinary visionaries.
The Cheesecake Factory is quietly crushing it.
While the rest of casual dining fights for attention, The Cheesecake Factory has quietly become a social media darling. The brand is leaning hard into organic buzz instead of pouring money into ads, and its new Bowls & Bites menu keeps giving fans something fresh to post. That famously giant menu has turned into a personality of its own, and the result is a chain that feels genuinely of-the-moment, with diners showing up for what they saw on their feeds, not a coupon.
There is a grocery angle too. The brand has pushed onto store shelves with its Cheesecake Factory at Home line: its famous brown bread, frozen cheesecakes, and premium ice cream are all sold in supermarkets now. So the name blowing up your feed is also quietly landing in your cart.
Why the industry is watching:
Organic social, not ad spend or discounts, is driving the buzz and the traffic.
A single viral dish can still pack a dining room in 2026.
The restaurant brand doubles as a grocery brand, turning feed-fame into freezer space.
VIRAL BITE
The story everyone is posting about, so we had to bite!
Pop-Tarts and Liquid Death made a toaster pastry.
The year's unlikeliest collab is back. Pop-Tarts and canned-water brand Liquid Death are dropping "Squeezed to Death," a limited-edition Frosted Orange pastry with a citrus jam inspired by Liquid Death's orange soda, landing at participating retailers in November. It is equal parts breakfast and bit, and honestly, we would try it.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT
A bite-sized serving of the strange, surprising or just plain random facts.
🥜 A daily handful of peanuts may be good for your brain.
In a Maastricht University study, older adults who ate about 60 grams of peanuts a day for 16 weeks showed a better insulin response in memory-related parts of the brain. Researchers think it is several things in the peanut working together, not one magic nutrient.
Snack smarter, think sharper.

See you next week!
