GLOBAL GRUB

The current global forces shaping our food industry ecosystem.

Trump slams the door on Canadian goods 🍁

The trade war is about to land in the pantry. Starting Sept 29, the US will ban a range of Canadian imports, including alcohol, dairy, and motorcycles, the latest escalation after Canada hit back with retaliatory tariffs of its own. It is not in effect yet, so food and drink businesses on both sides of the border have a narrow window to rework sourcing before the door closes. The message is blunt: plan for disruption now, because business as usual has an expiry date.

Big Food takes sugar to court

The people who make your cookies are suing the people who make them sweet. General Mills, Mars, and McKee Foods filed suit against major sugar producers, including ASR Group and United Sugar, alleging they coordinated granulated-sugar prices from 2017 to 2024 through a data-sharing system. The defendants control roughly 65% of the market, and the food makers want triple damages, noting prices fell once antitrust suits started landing in 2024. If it sticks, it is a rare look under the hood of how a pantry staple gets priced.

The frozen aisle bets on Ozempic

The GLP-1 boom just got its own frozen aisle. Hanover Foods launched Skinny Veg, a line of frozen meals built for people on weight-loss drugs: four five-ingredient dishes, each based on a single vegetable plus a grain or legume, avocado oil, pepper and salt. CEO Jeff Warehime is selling the clean-label, additive-free angle as "real food for real people," and the line is in select retailers now with a national rollout in 2027. As GLP-1 shrinks appetites and shifts what shoppers want on the plate, expect more brands racing to feed the smaller, veg-forward stomach.

ON THE MENU: LOBLAW 🍁

An insider look at the industry disruptors, biggest players, and culinary visionaries.

🤖 The grocer that wants to answer your health questions

While US chains chase tech chiefs, Canada's biggest grocer is quietly becoming one. Loblaw launched PC Chat, an AI chatbot built into its PC Health platform that answers Canadians' health questions in plain language.

It is trained on Canadian clinical guidelines and vetted by a medical advisory board, and it personalizes answers when a shopper connects their health profile. Loblaw is careful to frame it as a guide to next steps, not a replacement for a doctor.

The bigger play is obvious: the more a grocer owns your health questions, the more it owns your pharmacy, your loyalty, and your basket. It is a Canadian company betting the future of grocery is part supermarket, part health platform.

VIRAL BITE

The story everyone is posting about, so we had to bite!

A Kardashian lands on Canadian shelves 🍁

Celebrity snacking just crossed the border. Khloe Kardashian's high-protein popcorn brand, Khloud, rolled out across Canada this week, landing at Costco, Walmart, Loblaws, Circle K and Starbucks in White Cheddar and Sweet & Salty Kettle Corn. It is the latest celebrity food line betting that a famous name plus a protein claim is enough to earn shelf space, and with that retail lineup, it is not starting small. Whether Canadians actually bite is the real test.

🫐 The berry that burns fat

New research suggests pterostilbene, a compound in blueberries, may help muscle cells burn excess fat.
Turns out the tiny berry on your morning oats might be pulling more weight than your gym membership.

PRESENTED BY OUR SPONSOR

Food logistics that actually shows up.
When your load is mission-critical and the receiver is strict, you want a carrier that treats the delivery window like a deadline, not a suggestion. Two-Points Logistics has spent 23 years moving food across Canada and over the US border, inbound and outbound, into the toughest receivers in the business: Walmart, Costco, Loblaws and every major retailer, every day.

They run FTL and LTL, and 60% of their volume is refrigerated/frozen, so bakery, produce, meat, dairy and confectionery all move at the right temperature. And they back it up: if a late penalty is on them, they reimburse it. Pricing is market competitive, from enterprise shippers down to small business.

In a week when cross-border food trade is front-page news, that kind of reliability is worth knowing.
